Para-cycling Report September 2015

I participated in the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup, held in Pietermaritzburg from 11 - 13 September 2015 with the following results Men T2 (Tricycle):

Time Trial: - Bronze medal
Road Race: - Gold medal

First up was the time trial, held at the Midmar Dam on a circular route of 8km, doing 2 laps.
It was cold and very windy when I set off for the start of my time trial. It was a technical route with cambers (which made it more difficult for tricycles) as well as a few stiff uphills.
I managed to secure a third place, winning the bronze medal. Competing on home soil made it more exiting and I enjoyed the whole experience very much.

The road race course was very fast and favoured sprinters with perfect overcast weather conditions, with no wind. We did 4 laps on a 6 km route.
After the first lap, everybody stayed together, but on lap 2, I decided to put in an attack on a steep climb and managed to split the group in two with the German, Hans-Peter Durst and fellow South African, Gerhard Viljoen.
On lap three, I again attacked after the Start/Finish line and HP and I managed to break away from Gerhard.
During lap four, HP and I drove hard at the front of the race, making turns to push the pace.
Just before the Finish line, there was an almost double left turn and at that stage I was lying second. As soon as I came round the corners, I nailed it hard on the straight to the finish line and managed to win against the World Champion to take the Gold medal with half a wheel length.

I was so happy that all my hard work paid of and I could win the Gold medal for team SA on home soil.
It took me a while to sink in that I actually managed to win against a very tough competitor.
I ended 2nd overall on the 2015 Para-cycling World Cup Rankings and I am waiting for the updated World Rankings, where I will definitely end in the top 5.

I would like to thank the following people and organizations for believing in me and supporting me:

• Macsteel Maestros for all their support through the years and helping me with my fitness training.
• DHL for shipping my tricycle to the National Championships each year.
• 36ONE Asset Management for contributing towards the cost of my National Champion cycling clothes.
• My trainer, Boyd Roberts, who helped me win four medals this year and improve on my overall position on the World     Rankings (3rd).
Cellfood for supplying me with Cellfood Supplement and Cellfood Sport.
• Specialized for sponsoring me with my racing and time trial helmets and S-Works cycling shoes.
• Rebul Packaging for sponsoring me with my custom made tricycle box, to keep my tricycle secure during overseas tours.
• Oakley

With the 2016 Rio Paralympics in coming up in less than a year, I will give it my all, through hard work and dedication, to qualify for the SA Team.

I appreciate your continuous support very much.

Warm regards,

Goldy Fuchs

Para-cycling Report August 2015

I participated in two International competitions with the following results:

1. UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup held in Elzach, Germany 24 - 26 July 2015:

T2 (Tricycle) - Time Trial: - Silver medal

Road Race: - 7th place

First up was the World Cup with a tough 9 km uphill Time Trial course which suited me perfectly. The finish line ended in the beautiful Black Forest. I felt good at the start of my Time Trial and the weather conditions were perfect. I gave it my all and claimed second spot, earning myself the silver medal. I was very happy with my podium finish in the second World Cup I participated in this year.

The road race course was very demanding and technical in a typical criterium style racing format. We don't have courses like this is SA to train on and in the end I managed to secure 7th place.

Next up was the World Championships, held on 30 July and 1 August 2015.

2. UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships held in Nottwil, Switzerland

T2 (Tricycle) - Time Trial: - 6th place

Road Race: - 7th place

The Time Trial and Road Race both took place on the same 7 km route, on which we did several laps.

The uphill course with a fast, technical descent did not suit me, but I managed to finish in 6th place in my time trail. On the day of my road race, it rained in the morning and the course was wet and cold. I managed to keep up with my competitors in the road race, but lost contact with them in the second last lap and eventually finished in 7th place.

My next event will be the UCI Road World Cup to be held in Pietermaritzburg from 11 to 13 September 2015. The worlds best Para-cyclist will be competing in the final competition for the year to gain maximum UCI points to qualify for the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.

I would like to thank all my sponsors, like Cellfood, enabling me to do my best and to improve on my performance this year.

I would like to thank Macsteel Maestros for all their support and helping me with my fitness training.

Also a huge thank you to my trainer, Boyd Roberts, who helped me win two medals this year and improve on my overall position in the World Champs.

With the 2016 Rio Paralympics coming up next year, I will give it my all, through hard work and dedication, to qualify for the SA Team and appreciate your continuous support.

Warm regards,

Para-cycling Report June 2015

I participated in the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup held in Maniago, Italy on 5 and 6 June 2015, competing in the T2 (Tricycle) classification, with the following results:

• Road Race – Bronze medal

• Time Trial– 4th place

First up was the time trial on Friday, 5 June. The route passed through the narrow streets of the villages of Alba and Campagna and ended on a cobblestone section in Maniago where I claimed a well-deserved 4th place in a very competitive field of riders. I have been training hard for the 2015 season with my new trainer, Boyd Roberts, and was very happy with my result.

The second day got of to a good start for Team SA, with me winning bronze in the road race. A group of four riders managed to breakaway but in the last lap we caught up with two of the breakaway riders. On the final stretch, I managed to take the best line through a 90 degree corner and sprinted to third place on the cobblestone section on the finish line.

I am now looking forward to hear if I will be in the SA team to participate in the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships to be held in Nottwil, Switzerland from 28 July until 2 August 2015.

I have also been selected for the South African Para-cycling Team that will participate in the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa scheduled for September this year.

I would like to thank you for your support, enabling me to do my best and to improve my performance this year. With the 2016 Rio Paralympics coming up next year, I will give it my all, through hard work and dedication, to qualify for the SA Team and appreciate your continuous support.

Para-cycling Report April 2015

I participated in the 2015 Pennypinchers South African Road, Time Trial and Para-cycling Championships which was held in Nelspruit from 3 to 8 February 2015, competing in the T2 (Tricycle) classification, with the following results:

• Road Race – Gold medal (winning convincingly with 2min. 08 seconds)

• Time Trial– Silver medal

The time trial race started early in the morning in good weather conditions, overcast but luckily no rain. The course suited me, with one tough climb, a few circles and a narrow 90 degree corner. The race was hard from the beginning, starting on a slight incline. I had a great first lap and gave it my all. In the end, I came second with a time of 00:23:31 and Gerhard Viljoen first with a time of 00:23:10.

The road race took place on the same course as the time trial which was pretty technical with corners, circles to navigate around as well as a tough climb and one steep hill. I managed to break away in the second lap (of four) and stayed ahead until the finish and won the road race convincingly with 2 min. 10 seconds. Road Race results: Goldy Fuchs - 00:49:32; Gerhard Viljoen - 00:51:42. I am the road race title holder in the T2 Para-cycling classification for the past five years since 2010.

I have been included in the South African Para-cycling Team who will participate in the UCI Italian World Cup to be held in Maniago, Italy, over the period 5 - 7 June 2015.

I have also been selected for the South African Para-cycling Team that will participate in the South African UCI World Cup in Pietermaritzburg, scheduled for September this year.

My selection into the SA Team was based on the national team selection criteria for the 2015 Para-cycling Wold Championships and World Cup events for 2015, published on the Cycling South Africa website.

My inclusion into the SA Para-cycling team for the above mentioned World Cup Tours, was due to my performance in the 2015 National Championships

Warm regards,
